Structural columns are part of almost every warehouse and commercial facility, but their position can place them close to handling routes, storage areas and daily operations. A clearly visible column protector can help define the column base and make it easier for teams to recognise a fixed obstacle when planning a busy site.

Where column protectors can support site planning

Typical locations include warehouse aisle ends, commercial work areas, service zones and public-space projects where structural columns sit near operational routes. The protector should form part of a wider layout review that also considers traffic direction, floor markings, lighting, sightlines and the behaviour of people and equipment.

A column protector does not make an area collision-proof and should not replace structural assessment, traffic management or operator training. Its role and suitability need to be considered within the complete site arrangement.

Measure the column before selecting a size

The Oranlite heavy-duty column protector is made from polyethylene/LDPE and is offered with inner-diameter options of 15.5 cm and 21.5 cm. Measure the actual column at the point where the protector will sit, including corners, coatings and any irregularities. Also record base plates, anchor bolts, pipes or nearby equipment that could affect the fit.

Do not select a protector from the nominal column size alone. Compare the measured envelope with the chosen variant and allow enough installation clearance for the product to sit correctly. If the column, base plate or surrounding arrangement falls outside the listed options, confirm suitability with the supplier before ordering.

Review the surrounding route

Check how staff, pallet trucks, trolleys and other equipment approach the column. Avoid creating a new obstruction in a narrow route, blocking an emergency path or reducing visibility at an intersection. Floor markings and operating rules should remain clear after installation.

For multi-column projects, survey every location rather than assuming all columns are identical. Older facilities often contain changes in column finish, base construction or available clearance from one area to another.

Installation and inspection checklist

  • Confirm the selected inner diameter against the measured column and surrounding fittings.
  • Clean the floor and column area before installation.
  • Follow the supplied assembly and securing instructions.
  • Check that the completed installation is stable and does not interfere with the route.
  • Inspect the protector regularly for movement, deformation, cuts, loose components or other damage.
  • Keep the bright surface clean enough to remain easy to identify.
  • After any contact incident, inspect both the protector and the underlying structure through the site's normal safety procedure.
